Using Salt with your watercolors

One of the things I love about watercolors is that although there are foundational techniques that are important to practice and use, there are so many interesting techniques that go beyond the basics that make painting with watercolors especially fun and interesting.

Applying salt to your paintings, is one of those techniques.

If you’ve been interested in exploring the use of salt in your artwork, this week’s video will guide you in how to work with salt.

I discuss two things to be mindful of and the results may surprise you:

  1. Amount of Wetness: Depending on how wet your paint and paper are, you can expect different results. You might find dryer applications more appealing, or maybe you’ll like it more when the paint and paper are wetter.

  2. Size of Salt Crystals: Does size matter? I explore larger vs. finer crystals to see what results you can expect.
